Elizabeth Bassett

Elizabeth has fifteen years of litigation and appellate experience. Elizabeth is responsible for the firm’s appellate practice. Elizabeth has worked on appeals on both sides of the bench, having served as a Staff Attorney at the Supreme Court of Nevada for more than six years. In private practice, Elizabeth has represented clients before the appellate courts with an emphasis on the areas of family law, civil procedure, torts medical malpractice, and contracts. Elizabeth’s litigation experience includes general civil litigation, probate and trust litigation, and family law. Elizabeth is licensed to practice in both Nevada and California courts.

Responsibilities

 

Advising and representing clients and attorneys in all stages of appellate practice, including handling appeals from start to finish, but also providing targeted consulting services to assist attorneys in drafting appellate briefs and preparing for appearances before the Supreme Court of Nevada.

 

Advising and assisting clients and attorneys in preserving trial issues for appeal, including providing advice on or participating in the drafting of motions in limine, dispositive motions, jury instructions, judgments, and post-trial motions, including motions for a new trial.

 

Preparing and filing amicus briefs.

 

Drafting extraordinary writ petitions.

 

Drafting petitions for review requesting the Supreme Court of Nevadaís discretionary review of Nevada Court of Appeals decisions.

 

Advising and representing clients in all phases of civil litigation matters, including trust disputes, probate matters, and all phases of family law.

Representative Cases and Experience

 

Represented clients in filing and responding to appeals in child custody and other family law matters before the Nevada Appellate Courts.

 

Represented clients in filing appeals challenging the dismal of their action by the trial court.

 

Drafted and opposed extraordinary petitions filed in the appellate courts.

 

Reviewed and researched civil appeals and extraordinary petitions, especially in the areas of family law, civil procedure, medical malpractice, and contracts.

 

Reviewed extraordinary petitions and made recommendations to the Justices of the Supreme Court of Nevada.

 

Drafted memorandum and dispositional orders for presentation to the Justices of the Supreme Court of Nevada.

Employment Background

 

Prior to joining Blanchard Krasner and French, Elizabeth served as a Staff Attorney at the Supreme Court of Nevada for more than six years.  She interacted with the Supreme Court Justices regarding a wide-range of civil and criminal legal issues before the Court, particularly in the areas of procedure, torts, contracts, criminal and real property.  This experience exposed her to the behind the bench workings of the Supreme Court of Nevada, and Elizabeth has an in-depth knowledge of the procedures of the Court and the standards that apply to appeals, extraordinary writ petitions, and petitions for review.  Prior to working at the Court, Elizabeth litigated numerous cases with a private law firm for eight years, representing individuals and business in all phases of litigation.  Elizabeth also practiced at an appellate specialty law firm in California, drafting appeals and extraordinary writ petitions for law firms and individual clients.

Special Notes

 

Elizabeth enjoys hiking, spending days at the lake, and generally enjoying all of the amazing outdoor activities that the Reno-area provides with her husband and son. Elizabeth also enjoys boxing training, and belongs to a local boxing club.
